Our class is really becoming cohesive now! We began stations this week. The children are quickly becoming used to the routines and expectations. I hope to start using parent volunteers in 2 weeks. A schedule will follow.
In Reading Workshop this week: We are continuing to read nonfiction texts for understanding and to identify and use the unique nonfiction conventions.
Math: We are continuing to develop strategies for more rapid computation of facts. On Wednesday I sent home a half page report telling you how your child did on fact recall in October compared to September. Most children showed significant growth in addition. One area of difficulty for many children involves word problems using the words how many more or how many fewer. Any practice you can provide your children is greatly appreciated.
Science: The students have begun writing and illustrating the nonfiction text that I will be sending out to be published at the end of next week (I hope!). This is the book that I told you about at Open House. You will be receiving a form Tuesday asking if you would like to purchase a copy of your own. It is a hard cover book for $19.95. I will show you a sample at the conference.
Writing: This is the area where I have seen the most growth! Your children are beginning to easily select their own topics and write long using details. I am seeing some improvement in mechanics and also a greater willingness to revise.
I am looking forward to meeting with you over the next few weeks. The book order arrived and you should have received your order on Tuesday. A new form was sent out Wednesday. New orders are due in 2 weeks. Have a great weekend!
